AMPERSAND is ellie sutherland, jacob perry, joseph hubbard, timothy parsons, Madeline Apple Healey, & Andrew Padgett.

Ampersand aims to provide a world-class vocal chamber music experience for our audience & participant artists, to breathe new life into the music of past centuries, & to provide a sonic backdrop for collective stillness & appreciation of beauty through innovative multimedia concerts & workshops.

By way of explanation, our core repertoire is 16th century vocal music, also known as Renaissance polyphony. Polyphony, from the Latin for ‘many voices’, is a style of musical composition utilized in Europe, & later in North America, from about 1200-1650. The compositions are crafted in a surprisingly non-hierarchical fashion, especially surprising given the historical backdrop of this repertoire — each individual vocal part is no more or less important than the others — a musical model of interdependence.

our history

Founded in 2014 by friends from music school, AMPERSAND presented four seasons of programming in New York City and Cleveland, OH, including collaborations with Holy Trinity Bach Vespers and Urban Playground Chamber Orchestra. After a several-year hiatus, some introspection, & a pandemic, we’re delighted to have gotten the band back together to make world-class vocal chamber music in Vermont.

We had our debut concert with a bunch of dear friends at the Old Round Church in Richmond in the summer of 2022 & are looking forward to seeing you & singing for you this year!
